The Launch Issue!

The Literacy Loop

Launching deeper conversations about what, why, and how we teach literacy.

Welcome!
We’re so glad you’re here. The Literacy Loop is our new space to share ideas, explore big questions, and celebrate all things literacy. Think of it as a conversation about the practices and priorities that matter most in classrooms today. We’ll dig into hot topics, share research-based insights, and reflect on the instructional moves that make a difference for students, all while sharing celebrations from schools and classrooms along the way. And yes, we’ll do it with our trademark passion, because we love talking literacy!

Why a Newsletter?
For a long time, we’ve dreamed of creating a literacy newsletter. But we didn’t want just another quick-read bulletin. Literacy is far too complex for one-off snippets. Teachers deserve more than bite-sized soundbites. They deserve time and space to engage with ideas in a way that honours the depth of their practice.

At the heart of our work is a simple but important belief: teachers are the experts of their classrooms. You know your students, your content, and your context better than anyone. Our role is not to prescribe one-size-fits-all solutions but to provide strong foundations from research and practice. We hope these newsletters give you the building blocks to make the best choices for your students, your classrooms, and your schools.

Our Format
Our goal is to share 3 newsletters each month. Because literacy is layered and multifaceted, we’ve designed a format that allows us to go deeper into each topic. The 1st Monday of the month, we will share Layers of Literacy updates, including where you can find us, and celebrations from real schools and classrooms. Every 3rd and 4th Monday of the month, we will explore a hot topic in literacy, following this sequence:

  • Learning I: WHAT – Defining the topic and breaking it down.

  • Learning II: WHY – Exploring its role in literacy learning.

  • Learning III: HOW (Elementary) – Strategies to support developing readers and writers.

  • Learning IV: HOW (Secondary) – Strategies to support older students across disciplines.

Join the Loop
We see this as a learning journey, and we’d love for you to walk it with us. If there’s a burning question or a literacy challenge on your mind, send it our way at newsletter@layersofliteracy.com. Your insights and experiences inspire what we research, write and talk about. Please also feel welcome to invite your colleagues to join the Literacy Loop. As our collective expertise grows, we can keep building, refining, and strengthening the practices that help students thrive as readers and writers.
